Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy II
First of all, what is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement (BHRT) therapy. Bioidentical simply means that the hormones you are prescribed are identical to what you were making when you were 20 years old. The hormones are made by a pharmacist who has specialized in compounding. If you think about it, before we had the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) making our medications, the pharmacists actually made Morphine in a mortar and pestle. These hormones are compounded for you in different dosages and are not massively produced. They must be prescribed and you cannot buy them over the counter.
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) has been prescribed in Europe for 50 years. Usually, after one half century we know if something askew is going to happen. American medical training does not teach BHRT because it is "natural." Only synthetic substances can be studied and patented by the FDA. Most people are confused regarding BHRT, most are confused by the words Estrogen and Testosterone. The media information you are receiving is full of misleading statements and full of fear. For example, one cannot use the word Estrogen as there are hundreds of types of Estrogen. Which Estrogen are they referring to? Did you know that men and women are full of Estrogen, whether they are taking it or not. Our food, air, and water supply is so full of fake Estrogen that we even have a special word for it - Xenoestrogenic compounds. Oh, we doctors do love big words.
Xeno (pronounced ZEE-no) means foreign, a chemical pesticide, or solvent that ceates a hormone-like effect in the body. Doctors realize that this xenoestrogenic onslaught we are experiencing acts like an endocrine disruptor. This means your bodies own production of Insulin, Thyroid (yes, you probably have a thyroid issue), Estrogen, Progesterone, Dehydroepiandosterone (DHEA), Melatonin, Cortisol, Testosterone, Oxytocin, and Human Growth Hormone is "interrupted." Our hormones are not working so hot anyway because we are aging.
Think about this for a moment. Since we are so full of fake Estrogen, the rest of our hormonal cascade is experiencing a endocrinological tsunami. Scientists tell us that Floridian alligators are being born with questionable genitalia, some males with some unique female genitals, and some males with exaggerated male genitals. The scientists are attributing this to environmental toxins. I often wonder if this is why we are seeing more gender identity disorder (GID) patients.
Women go through menopause and experience a myriad of symptoms which change their lives and often help end their marriages, men go through andropause and have heart attacks, lose their libido, and get that 14 month pregnancy look. There is a solution which is the good news. The not so good news is that you need to takes responsibility for your health into your own hands and learn how to find a doctor who has been trained at the US medical conferences or who have gone to Europe to train with European Endocrinologists.
Replacing your slowly declining hormones prevents these fake hormones from entering your receptor sites. Receptor sites are the keys on every single cell that lets stuff in, like the right hormones -- instead of the fake hormones in our beautifully complex universe. I understand that we have astounding lucid confusion regarding this hormonal issue. Language is very powerful and needs to be used with respect. Find doctors who have been trained by Thierry Hertoghue, MD a fourth generation European endocrinologist. Please read his book entitled "The Hormone Solution," which explains the 15 or so hormones which are gently replaced by European endocrinologists.
