The Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) diet actually helps you lose fat, even those proverbial last ten pounds nearly everyone complains about. The HCG diet was researched and developed in Italy by A.T.W. Simeons, M.D. in Italy around fifty years ago. Many moons ago I learned that this is how many Europeans lose fat. Originally, I decided not to suggest any diet to my patients because I believed most are suffering from overconsumptive undernutrition with little or no movement. Also, I wan\’t going to expose my patients to a diet that was comprised of 500 calories a day for 23 days. After attending multiple medical conferences and learning more about the biochemistry of this diet, I changed my mind. Allow me to explain.
My patients know that I try everything first so I purposely gained 10 pounds. Then I proceeded forward trying the HCG diet with speculative exuberance. I must admit that even though food isn\’t in the top three joys of my life, I was fairly fearful of only eating 500 calories a day.
I did the HCG diet in the following way. For two days I gorged, followed by 23 days of a diet consisting of 500 calories and the self administration of a daily injection with a tiny Insulin needle of HCG. Supposedly the HCG will pull 1500 or more calories of fat from my abnormal fat stores, rendering a total daily caloric intake exceeding 2000 calories. Happily I was surprisedly NOT hungry.
You need to know that fat is full of toxins that your body considers to be a pollutant. The solution to polution is dilution. So your body actually makes more fat to dilute your toxic fat. This is one of many reasons why people say they are not only unable to lose weight, they seem to gain more weight whilst eating the same, or less, or exercising more. Oh my! It is not uncommon for many of my patients to be carrying 50 – 90 pounds of FAT, and very little lean tissue. Toxic fat is one of the major contributors to the development of cancer.
There are three kinds of fat. There is STRUCTURAL FAT which fills the gaps between various organs. So think of this kind of fat as a sort of packing material.
The second type of fat is a NORMAL RESERVE OF FUEL FAT upon which your body can freely make withdrawals when the nutritional income from the intestinal tract is insufficient to meet the demand of your activities. This normal reserve of fat is localized all over your body and cannot be called obesity.
Now here is the really important part~~~~~there is a third type of fat which is entirely abnormal. Only the overweight possess this type of fat. THIS ABNORMAL FAT IS NOT AVAILABLE TO YOUR BODY IN A NUTRITIONAL EMERGENCY unless you are approaching death. If you feel as though most of your fat is locked away in places you don\’t find attractive and you can\’t get to it, you are right. When you do lose weight, you lose the structural fat and the normal reserve fat, NOT THE ABNORMAL FAT. This is why people who lose weight have sunken cheeks, bony chests, and still have those muffin tops, love handles and saddle bags so many find unattractive.
After much studying, I learned what Dr. Simeons proposed so many decades ago in his research. The daily injections of HCG coupled with the 500 calorie intake for 23 days forces your body to use your abnormal fat for calories and energy. The 1500 or more calories a day are pulled from your abnormal fat stores as a result of the HCG injections.
Two other biomedical events are occurring which intrigue me~~~your set point for weight is lowered to what it was when you were younger, and your diencephalon (Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis) is recalibrated. These two biochemical happenings are immensely important to be lean and age well.
