WHAT TO EAT

WHAT TO EAT

It seems there is massive confusion about what to eat. The short answer is real food. We will not be hungry if we eat ten vegetables and fruits a day. I truly understand why you are confused. One day you read that soy is good, then you read that it is bad. Then there is the issue of portions which is one of the only things most commercial weight loss systems teach you. PLEASE STOP DIETING. PLEASE STOP EATING FAKE FOOD. PLEASE LEARN TO READ LABELS. PLEASE TAKE A BIG GARBAGE BAG AND CHUCK ALL THE FAKE FOOD IN YOUR PANTRY AND REFRIGERATOR. PLEASE STOP EATING CHEMICALS AND FAKE SUGAR. Or, you will constantly be hungry because you are suffering from subclinical malnutrition. And - you are addicted to unreal food.

And please try to strike a balance with this food thing. It is OK to go to a party and eat what they offer. Eventually you will find that fake food does't taste very good. And eat a salad and some vegetable soup before you leave. You won't be so tempted to go crazy.

Until my next book is published, here is a small list to guide you:

The first place to start is to continue eating the way you are eating, BUT, eat 10 vegetables and fruits a day. Read EAT FOR HEALTH by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. and THE CHINA STUDY to understand why you are doing this.

BEST FOODS: extra virgin olive oil in glass jars, coconut oil, avocado, goat or organic milk for cooking (limit dairy as it makes you fat and increases chances of breast cancer), yogurt (add five probiotics), organic grass fed beef, organic chicken and turkey, fish, eggs, legumes, beans, seeds, whole grains with FIBER, (limit the bread) soy but only Tempeh, Tofu, Miso, and Soy Sauce which is cultured and fermented as this is the good soy and probably not the soy you are presently eating, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, peppers, onions, beets, tomato, asparagus (see list of 7 colors of food we should eat everyday at end) yams (not white potatoes which are pure sugar), eat the skin of the yam which contains minerals, oranges, all fruits that end in the word berries garbanzo, kidney, lentil, pinto, green, and black beans garlic, ginger, cayenne, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, stevia for sweetening (but eventually train your palate to dislike intense sweetness), green tea, dandelion root tea, water, 100% organic cranberry juice to add to your water, and of course, moderate alcohol .

NOT THE BEST FOODS: margarine, Nutrasweet, Splenda, any diet food, fake fats, pretty much anything that is white, cake, pies, cookies, doughnuts, bottled dressings/sauces...... pizza, ham, PASTA, low fat milk, white potatoes which is just like putting teaspoons of sugar down your throat salami, bologna, BBQ ribs, too much caffeine, non-organic coffee, waffles, pancakes, Pop Tarts, soda, chicken nuggets, white rolls, pretzels, potato chips, corn chips.......usually this means anything in a package, container.........

Now that you realize why we have all this extra fat, now that you realize the food in schools is totally devoid of nutrients -- this transition can be slow or fast. That is why I love the work of Dr. Joel Fuhrman and why I told you to read and listen to EAT FOR HEALTH. If you need to have taken a course in organic chemistry to understand what the food label says, throw it in the trash. Basically, discard all the white stuff, all the chemicals, all the diet stuff, all foods made with hydrogenated/trans fats, all the stuff with high fructose corn syrup (which is in 100% of our food supply and makes you hungry all the time). All this crap food makes you hungry all the time. Actually, we are not hungry. We are addicted to crap food and the food companies understand our biochemistry very well.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, our CNN medical correspondent said we should eat seven colors of food each day.

The seven colors are Red, Red Purple, Orange, Orange Yellow, Yellow Green, Green, White Green. This is presently a goal for most of us, and the list is as follows:

RED - tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon, red peppers

RED-PURPLE - grapes, prunes, cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries

ORANGE - carrots, pumpkin, winter squash, sweet potatoes, apricots, cantaloupe

ORANGE - YELLOW - oranges, yellow grapefruit, peaches, lemons, limes, papayas, pineapples, nectarines

YELLOW - GREEN - collard, spinach, corn, green beans, peas, honeydew GREEN, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, watercress, green peppers

WHITE - GREEN - garlic, onions, chives, leeks, green onions, shallots, asparagus, pears, endive, mushrooms, celery

GREEN - some of which was listed above

So by now you realize that we have gotten real far off the real food track and the thinking that Hippocrates proclaimed that Food is Medicine. I hope not as I look at what people feed their children and families. I know very few who eat 10 fruits and vegetables a day. If you were to eat this kind of volume with this kind of nutrient density, then you wouldn't be hungry. Truly. OK there is a learning curve but go ahead, try it. Eat whatever you want after you make sure you are getting 10 fruits and vegetables a day. You can't eat that much. It is like having that stomach stapling surgery without actually having it.

The medical studies still say we don't need a multiple vitamin! Have they seen what is in people's shopping carts? And do they know that most doctors don't learn any of this information in medical training. Unless they are fascinated by nutritional biochemistry like myself, and obviously Dr. Fuhrman who is my new hero and here to save our planet. I am so appreciative for his work.

Yes, ever since we went to low fat, we have become fatter and fatter as a society. But did we really go low fat. Look at yourself in your birthday suit and tell me if you have any fat to lose. Then stop buying low fat stuff because it has lots of chemicals and sugars in it. Then learn to make your own salad dressings. Then, really, count how much fat you have every day. And don't forget how often you eat out - and remember that anything tastes better (with your present taste buds) with lots of fat, sugar, and salt.

For a rational laser focused approach, read and listen to the work of Joel Fuhrman, M.D. - EAT FOR HEALTH. And read THE CHINA STUDY.

Please stop dieting so you can get healthy and lean and happy. Aren't you tired of thinking "does my butt look big in this?"
