HOW DID I GET SO FAT? WHY AM I SO HUNGRY?

I recently attended a 5 hour calligraphy course. The following “food” was available: hoagies, soda (regular and diet), cookies, chocolates, brownies, pie, cake, chips, pretzels, and coffee. People were eating the chocolates during a 1 hour class and saying how tired they were and how they desperately needed coffee. Out of 100 attendees, 3 looked to be their ideal weight. I was a little sad…wondering what doctors are going to take care of these people in the coming decades. And I thought that Americans seem to need a brain transplant when it comes to eating.

When people see a picture of me as a 2 year old baby on the beach, Circa 1952, they often comment “there aren’t any fat people on the beach.” I often question what happened in the last 60+ years to render 2/3 of Americans overweight or obese.

So far, this is what I’ve deduced. I’m not sure what order to pose my thoughts to you but here goes — food addiction, decades of eating toxins, and an unhealthy microbiome.

* Food Addiction

Food scientists are creating foods which potentiate a food addiction to be actualized if you are so inclined. Foods are designed (with FDA approval) that will turn on the neuronal dopaminergic pathways (feel good pathways) if the person has a food addiction. Brain scans of those who are addicted to food show that food addict’s brains light up just like they just did cocaine. It seems that about 7/10 people have a food addiction.

We don’t have the tests to determine who has receptor sites that glow when an addictive substance appears. I often posit to patients that two people can go to a party and try cocaine for the first time. One will be able to use cocaine recreationally. The other will need cocaine like food and water. So for the present time I simply ask patients to tell me what happens when they eat refined foods. Can they eat it occasionally, or will they go on a long-term refined food binge if they have one M & M?

*Decades of Eating Toxins

What is the difference between eating regular beef and organic grass-fed beef? Regular beef is fattened with wheat, corn, synthetic estrogens, Bovine Growth Hormone, insecticides, pesticides, GMOs (genetically modified organisms), and purposely movement restricted. GMOs decrease brain chemicals and minerals, in addition to admittedly causing cancer.

Regular beef fattens very quickly with this diet, becomes obese, and is available for market in 14 weeks. So you are eating an obese cow full of substances that will fatten you quickly as well. Organic grass-fed beef (cows have four stomachs and naturally eat grass) takes two years to get to market, are lean, and devoid of the aforementioned substances that ensure weight gain.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is in 100 percent of prepared foods and is labeled with multiple names to confuse you. Corn fattens cattle and humans. Corn increases the hunger hormone in your stomach called Ghrelin. When you have Ghrelin your stomach is always growlin.

Americans are at a loss about what to eat if I suggest they discontinue or limit milk (dairy) and wheat. Humans are the only mammals who drink another species milk. Actually, humans only have the enzyme to metabolize milk for about two years. When you drink inorganic milk you’re getting all of the above unhealthy substances. And our beloved love affair with wheat is problematic. Think about it, when you mix flour in a bowl with water you get paste. You may be able to handle dairy and/or wheat for a decade or more, but eventually you become sticky — and full of toxins.

Patients who go on the hCG diet invariably tell me how much better they feel. They report feeling clearer, having more energy, sleeping more soundly, and having a better mood in addition to losing weight, which, heretofore was impossible to lose. Yes, the hCG potentiates multiple hormones that portend that low-dose bioidentical replacement is a future consideration, but people look and feel better because they aren’t eating any milk or wheat, toxins, corn, and sugar.

In Europe, there is food, just food. Not organic, inorganic….they simply aren’t permitted to adulterate their food supply the way American food scientists do.

*Unhealthy Microbiome Plays a Role in Weight Gain and Poor Health

First of all, what is this new word, microbiome? Our 13 trillion human cells coexist with 130 trillion bacterial cells. And, our 20,000 human genes coexist with 5 or so million bacterial genes — what is called the “microbiome” or the “second human genome.”
We’ve negatively altered our microbiome by eating the Western diet full of toxins, not taking probiotics, and being germ phobic (don’t put the hand sanitizer on when you push the grocery cart – imagine).

An explosion of research (presented at a recent Harvard medical conference I attended) reminds us what science has known for more than a century — we are colonized by bacteria (your microbiome) and a few species benefit our health by making important vitamins, amino acids (proteins), mopping up toxins, and enhancing digestion. The 20 foot tube running through the center of you houses your microbiome. Recently, the microbiome was linked to our obesity epidemic, the increasing number of autoimmune disorders, and childhood epidemics (allergies, asthma, ADD, ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s). In the state of NJ, one in 68 boys is born with some form of autism.

My website listed the dirty dozen fruits and vegetables that should be organic when possible, and a dozen others that don’t have to be. There’s also information about a website that will ship organic beef, chicken, etc.to your home – as my beach patients don’t have access to Wegman’s or Whole Foods. Take a quality probiotic (should contain many names and contain billions of bacteria). Read labels and if there are more than five ingredients, you are eating chemicals. And lastly, divide the number of carbohydrates on the label and divide by 5…..to see how many teaspoons of sugar you’re actually eating. Try to limit your carbohydrates to 100 or less grams a day, and increase your fiber to 40 or more grams a day.

New information and enlarging the box is a tad painful at first. Make changes slowly.
