MELATONIN AND MITOCHONDRIA

Mitrochondria are implicated in apoptosis.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) has the capacity to reduce apoptosis programs (cancer) and to enhance apoptosis programs (worsen neurodegenerative and ischemic conditions).

Melatonin:

scavenges oxygen and nitrogen based reactants in the mitochondria, thus limiting the loss of intramitochondrial glutathione

lowers mitochondrial protein damage

improves electron transport chain activity

reduces mitrochondrial DNA damage

improves mitochondrial respiration

increases ATP synthesis
